In 1981, Dr. Balmiki Ramsaran, along with his brother Dr Joe Ramsaran, founded St. Augustine Medical Laboratory. Dr B Ramsaran is the Medical Laboratory Director of the St. Augustine Medical Laboratory. From over 30 years in existence, we have grown to a family of over 50 employees based in our several branches.
In 2008, the St. Augustine Medical Laboratory became the Caribbean’s first medical laboratory to achieve accreditation to the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) medical laboratory standard, ISO 15189. The certificate of accreditation was granted by the Quality Management Program - Laboratory Services (now known as the Institute for Quality Management in Healthcare (IQMH) ), a subsidiary of the Ontario Medical Association of Canada. Our accreditation demonstrates the laboratory’s commitment to quality and competence.
Prior to joining the team, staff undergo a rigorous 3-month training program culminating in an evaluation with the entire process designed to ensure that each member on board meets the laboratory’s high quality standards. The Laboratory's Phlebotomists are all CASMET (Caribbean Association of Medical Technologists) certified and AMT (American Medical Technologists) registered and the laboratory technicians are qualified holders.
