Our History

Founded in 1981 by Dr. Balmiki Ramsaran and his brother Dr. Joe Ramsaran, St. Augustine Medical Laboratory (STAML) has been a trusted name in medical diagnostics for over 45 years. Dr. Balmiki Ramsaran serves as the Medical Laboratory Director, overseeing our continued growth and commitment to excellence. Today, STAML operates with a dedicated team of over 60 employees across multiple branches, and is widely recognized as a leading provider of high-quality medical laboratory services. In 2008, STAML made history as the first medical laboratory in the Caribbean to receive accreditation to the ISO 15189 standard, awarded by the Institute for Quality Management in Healthcare (IQMH), a division of the Ontario Medical Association in Canada. This prestigious accreditation underscores our unwavering commitment to maintaining the highest standards of quality and competence in all aspects of our work. At STAML, we are deeply invested in the professional development of our team. All staff members undergo an intensive 3-month training program, followed by a comprehensive evaluation, to ensure that every individual upholds our stringent quality standards. Our Phlebotomists are certified by the Caribbean Association of Medical Technologists (CASMET) and are registered with the American Medical Technologists (AMT), while our laboratory technicians are fully qualified professionals dedicated to providing the best care. We are proud to continue our legacy of excellence, offering reliable, accurate, and timely diagnostic services to our community.
